On February 12th 2025, White City Elementary held its annual spelling bee. This year, the Bee was moderated by Mrs. Susan Miller, and judged by Mrs. Lorri Kasten, Mrs. Debbie Blythe, and Mrs. Nancy Morgan. Our Top three winners were Tobias Coleman(1st), Kamryn Anderson(2nd), and Holly McCullough(3rd) in that order. The alternate chosen was Brianna Herndon. The top three winners have the chance to go to the Morris County Regional Spelling Bee, and the 4th becomes an alternate for if someone is unable to compete.
In 1908, the National Education Association (NEA) held what it called the first National Spelling Bee at its convention in Cleveland, Ohio. Marie Bolden, a girl from Cleveland, was named champion. The annual United States National Spelling Bee was started in 1925 by The Courier-Journal. Today, spelling bees are mostly run under the supervision of the Scripps Corporation. The year 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of national bees.
A spelling bee is an event in which a group of contestants take turns spelling different words until there is only one contestant left. Once the second to last contestant misspells a word, the last contestant is required to spell the word correctly. If they do this, then they win the bee. However, if they were to misspell the word, the other contestant would be brought back into the game, and they would continue until one person spelled a word which the other couldn’t.
